By renee cotsis ashokan field camp is an educational program in which sixth graders in the warwick valley central school district travel to, usually for about two to five days. here, they learn about how people lived around a few hundred years ago. during their days at ashokan, students do many different activities such as hiking, blacksmithing, tinsmithing, broom making, homestead, and farm tending. the activities for the students are designed to show kids how daily life was around the 1700's to 1800's. one activity is blacksmithing in which students chose an item to make such as a fire play for fun poker or a pot holder out of metal. when they make this, they are supervised by trained counselors, but still get to do most of the work by themselves so they can get the true blacksmithing experience. kids can also go on nature hikes, where counselors show students different types of plants and describe what they are used for. homestead is a favorite activity among the students. they take a hike up to an old one room house and cook food over a fire just like they used to. they learn how people used to keep food cold and how they used to prepare dinner and other meals. while some students are inside cooking, others are outside learning how to chop wood to help keep the fire going inside. before the students leave, they get to take a small walk around the house to get to know the woods nearby. these are only three of the many, many, many activities offered to students at ashokan. students also have night time presentations. last year, these consisted of a snake breeder, a bird catcher, and a man who traveled the entire country on his bicycle. these were the fun presentations, but sometimes students just sat back, relaxed, and watched a movie. after these presentations, students go to bed in their cabins. there is a girl's cabin, a boy's cabin, and a lakeside cabin. the lakeside cabin is a cabin in which select girls and boys are sent. it has a view of the lake and has a better layout than the rest of the cabins. students also have a curfew and must be in their cabin beds by that time. during the day, students do have activities, but they also have a free time period. in this time, many students go to the hit feature of ashokan. the wiggly bridge. it is a rope bridge that hangs over the lake. only one person can cross it at a time because of its low strength don't worry it is still safe ; and because of how much it moves around when you cross it. this feature gives the camp a fun look. but even if the bridge was not there, this would still be an educational, enjoyable, and fun experience for kids or play for fun poker.
