Old butler days will be celebrated this year on august 12 and 13, when the heritage of butler will be celebrated with music, games, exhibits and food! it's also a reunion of former residents of the town, which now lies buried beneath the watauga lake. on august 14, the annual meeting of the watauga academy alumni association will meet at the butler baptist church at 10 a.m. according to legend, daniel boone was one of the first to enter what would later be called butler as he traveled to kentucky in 1769. early in history, the settlement was known as smith's mill, and the town was incorporated about 1820. after the civil war the town was renamed butler, honoring col. r.r. butler, civil war hero, statesman and politician. the flood of 1940 was the final event which spurred the tva to begin work on the long discussed building of the world's tallest earth dam. as tva began to purchase more property needed for the project, residents were forced to search for new homes and get ready for the move. in an effort to keep some of the town intact, two mcqueen farms in cobbs creek community were divided into 130 lots and sold at auction. in all, about 400 families from butler and approximately 600 from surrounding areas were displaced when the 40, 000 acres were flooded by the tva. the gates of watauga dam closed in december 1948, to forever cover the picturesque little town of old butler. in 1999 a museum dedicated to the preservation of memories of the original town was constructed on property deeded to the butler ruritan club and watauga academy alumni association by selma "babe" curtis. the facility was built to resemble the old butler depot with the work being done by inmates of northeast correctional facility with supervision by foremen from shoun's lumber company. materials were supplied by larry shoun of the lumber company. artifacts from the old town, including memorabilia of watauga academy high school, have been donated by former residents and their heirs who are determined to save the history of the beloved little town. as you enter through the double doors of the museum, you will see to your right the evidence of how butler became a thriving place through sawmilling, railroading and farming. contents gathered from many different families make up the victorian parlor just to your left. next door is the general store, then walk down main street towards the picture of "the boy with a wagon; " turn left at the old butler post office, which contains the original mail boxes some former residents can still remember their box combinations and open them ; , then you will stop by the blue bird tea room with the friendly faces of mr. and mrs. neatherly smiling from the window. to your right there is an indian artifacts display, then civil war, and items from the beloved watauga academy. turn the corner and you will see photographs of townspeople, churches and kyle stout's barbershop where almost all children got their first haircut. the contents of the barber shop are the originals -- even to the razors, mugs, brushes, etc. items from whiting lumber company, photographs of the lumber camp, trains, etc., are there. also, two windows from the methodist church, along with the original pulpit, and photographs are displayed. a large map indicates where townspeople and surrounding sites were located; many photographs taken and items collected during the drawdown of the lake in 1983 are displayed. the museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. saturdays and sundays and other times by calling anna dugger at 768-2432 or judith helms at 768-2922. however, during old butler days, the museum will be open on friday and saturday from 9: 30 a.m. to 9: 30 p.m.

Prweb via prweb ; february 9, 2008 -- it may come as news to some, but there is more to the world of play hold em poker than texas holdem. with online holdem games tightening up and a generation of players who learned holdem in the online boom maturing, many are seeking to spread their wings a little and explore what other poker variants have to offer. today sees the launch of poker strategy discussion site chipsinthemiddle . chips in the middle will focus initially on omaha poker and on pot limit omaha, in particular. omaha is an alternative poker variant, somewhat similar to texas holdem in that it is played with five community cards and the easily recognisable flop, turn and river. the defining difference between the two games is that in omaha, each player is dealt four hole cards instead of two and must combine two of their hole cards with three cards from the board to make the best five card hand. pot limit omaha is a big action game that tends to play much bigger than similar blind level nl holdem games. the four hole card setup in omaha means that there are many more hand possibilities in play and much bigger hands regularly clashing over pots. doyle brunson famously described texas holdem as "the cadillac of poker games" and in that vein, pot limit omaha has been described as poker's rolls royce. really though, pot limit omaha is the ferrari, or the porsche, or the formula 1 racing car of poker games. pot limit omaha is the action game. it is fun, technically complex, easily approachable with its similarities to holdem and offers both challenge and earning potential to poker enthusiasts. chips in the middle is a strategy discussion website featuring content on pot limit omaha. please come and visit us at chipsinthemiddle.

Lengthy digression, you may have to say: "we are wandering off the subject, and i'd like to give others a chance to speak." problem: someone puts forth information which you know to be false. or, participants get hung up in a dispute about facts but no one present knows the answer. possible responses: ask, "has anyone heard of conflicting information?" if no one offers a correction, offer one yourself. and if no one knows the facts, and the point is not essential, put it aside and move on. if the point is central to the discussion, encourage members to look up the information before the next meeting. remind the group that experts often disagree. problem: lack of interest, no excitement, no one wants to talk, only a few people participating. possible responses: this rarely happens in study circles, but it may occur if the facilitator talks too much or does not give participants enough time to respond to questions. people need time to think, reflect, and get ready to speak up. it may help to pose a question and go around the circle until everyone has a chance to respond. occasionally, you might have a lack of excitement in the discussion because the group seems to be in agreement and isn't coming to grips with the tensions inherent in the issue. in this case, the leader's job is to try to bring other views into the discussion, especially if no one in the group holds them. "do you know people who hold other views? what would they say about our conversation?" problem: tension or open conflict in the group. perhaps two participants lock horns and argue. or, one participant gets angry and confronts another. possible responses: if there is tension, address it directly. remind participants that disagreement and conflict of ideas is what a study circle is all about. explain that, for conflict to be productive, it must be focused on the issue: it is acceptable to challenge someone's ideas, but personal attacks are not acceptable. you must interrupt personal attacks, namecalling, or put-downs as soon as they occur. you will be better able to do so you have established ground rules that disallow such behaviors and that encourage tolerance for all views. don't hesitate to appeal to the group for help; if group members bought into the ground rules, they will and poker stars play.
Spiffs & bogeys: another language? ask a group of business professionals to describe a spiff or bogey and you will probably get all kinds of answers. "what is it and if i have it do i need to see a doctor?" "is bogey a golf or a military term?" how about neither! in sales circles we may have heard or even used these terms and to the non-sales professional it can make as much sense as a babbling toddler. hopefully in this article we can discuss what these programs are and more specifically how they can be utilized in driving our sales initiatives. spiff is an acronym for special program incentive fund. why there is an extra f in the word spiff is one of life's great mysteries much like the building of the pyramids or atlantis. bogey as it is used in sales terms is a target or measurement in the sales environment. for our sake we will use them synonymously. it is up for debate how many distributors manufacturers use these types of programs to drive sales. when they are planned and orchestrated, spiffs bogeys are extremely effective in helping direct our sales efforts. these programs can be built around product s ; , product groups or even client types. you may have "run" a program in the past to some degree of success. or, more than likely, a manufacturer may have run a spiff and included a distributor as part of that program. in either case one might question the strategy of the implemented program. prior to running a program one key question we need to answer is "what is our desired result?". i know this sounds basic but so is the majority of business. our business isn't necessarily about being the most "sexy"; it is about being extremely intentional in our actions. you might be familiar with the card game texas hold'em or the world play hold em poker tour on television. it is certainly riding a wave of popularity in our country! even if you haven't played or seen the game, you may be able to answer the following questions: what would you say the goal is of a player entered into the world poker tour? a basic question and probably quite easy to answer! the goal is to be named the world poker tour champion. see that wasn't very difficult, let's try another one. this one may be a little more complicated: what strategy would a player utilize in achieving the goal? the strategies that can be employed are many and might involve bluffing early to establish a pattern or betting late to run opponents out. now for the final question and more specific to the playing of the card game: what about tactics, what kind of tactics would a player use in the world poker tour? the tactics might be the specific steps in playing a low pocket pair or attempting to "read" an opponent. all this to say is that the best card players have alignment between their tactics, strategy and goal. now as far as programs go, do these tactics spiffs bogeys ; align with our other tactics, strategies and goals? one of the major disconnects that i see frequently in business is lack of alignment in tactics and the company goal. a great place to begin any program is in answering the following question - how does this spiff align with our overall goal? for example, affecting top line growth and margin growth are two totally different animals and as such would give way to different tactics in accomplishing the goal.

The contemporary experience of women in prison at the beginning of the 21st century is based on the monumental increase in incarceration of u.s. citizens in the last three decades of the 20th century. this period has been labeled by meda chesney-lind 1997, 2000 ; as one of "equality with a vengeance." women, so to speak, have had "the book thrown at them" for demanding equality in the courts, at school and work, and in the home. thus, despite the fact that prisons and punishments were designed for the violent male offender, women have gotten the same harsh sentences applied to them in a conservative punishment era that intensified under the burden of "mandatory minimums, " "three-strikes" laws, and "truth-in-sentencing" laws.1 all such laws had the effect of incarcerating more people, for longer periods of time, with less options for diversion from prison or opportunities for parole or rehabilitation. thus, women were swept into the penal dragnet without regard for the fact that they were primarily nonviolent drug and economic theft, forgery, petty larceny ; offenders see steffensmeier and schwartz, 2003a, 2003b ; . as women's incarceration for violent crime convictions fell from almost half of all women prisoners49 percentin 1979 to a little over one-quarter28 percentin 1996 ; , women's overall incarceration rate skyrocketed chesney-lind, 2000; steffensmeier and schwartz, 2003a ; . let us look at the ways in which the numbers of women in prison increased in the last three decades of the 20th century and how this increase specifically impacted certain groups of women. the early 1970s mark the beginning of the second great experiment in prison historywith the systematic "mass imprisonment" of certain populations especially young black men, more than one-third of whom are under the control of the criminal justice system today ; is said to occur mauer, 1999, 2001; garland, 2001 ; .2 how does this impact the experience of women in prison and does it do so differently for poor black and latina than white women? and to play omaha poker.
