The idea of a `space' regatta dates back to 1979 when, in a break during intense negotiations with the contractors on the ariane launchers programme, it was decided to organise some inter-company sporting events and somebody suggested sailing! since then the regatta, now better known as the ariane's cup, has been run almost every year and the `friendly games' have become the `slightly more challenging races', but the `friendly rivalry' still remains. see the ariane's cup story on page 25. at the same time the uk's first "space scientists" were busy developing their own rocket, skylark, first launched in 1957. as a sounding rocket; skylark which was used to study the upper atmosphere in preparation for future manned spaceflight. though the uk later decided not to become involved in manned missions, the skylark rocket programme continued with over 441 launches before eventually being retired in 2006. the jodrell bank radio telescope was also completed in summer of 1957, and was the first and only instrument.

On september 25th, a luncheon was held in honor of jane blackburn. jane retired from horizons on august 21st after almost 25 years of service as the executive secretary. jane has seen many changes at horizons over the years including the building of the atrium and arches. several people told stories about jane and their experiences working with her. she was very easy to work with and always pleasant. at home, jane stays busy with her horses, dogs and cats. thanks for all the hard work over the years. enjoy retirement--we'll miss you.
