By heather j. ruskin and ray walshe emergent computing has become more topical in the last few years and has recently been categorised as a research field in its own right. the history of the field lies primarily in artificial intelligence, numerical methods and complexity theory all of which have contributed in no small part to emergent computing. emergent computing is sometimes described as `highly complex processes arising from the cooperation of many simple processes', ie high-level behaviour resulting from low- level interaction of simpler building blocks. one example of emergent behaviour that has been studied over recent years is that of `flocking'. in a `flock of birds', the flock is a dynamic entity consisting of hundreds or thousands ; of individuals. the flock constantly changes shape and direction but maintains overall cohesion. using cellular automata and treating each bird in the flock as an autonomous agent, with simple local rules controlling agent behaviour relative to closest neighbouring birds, a system can be constructed where the overall behaviour of the collective agents reflects the behaviour of the real flock. the emergent computing paradigm both explores and relies upon biologically and socially inspired systems, in which complex behaviour at the global level emerges in a nonlinear manner from large numbers of low-level component interactions. building software systems, using this component methodology, offers many advantages for solving complex problems, since the algorithmic complexity is achieved through software that is simple and flexible compared to conventional software development techniques building systems, with behaviour more than the sum of its parts, attracts methodologies and techniques from a number of disciplines, so we include as a broader definition of the topic, the mathematical and computational techniques that underpin the area of emergent computing. these include examples such as classifier systems, neural networks, biological immune systems, autocatalytic networks, adaptive game theory, chaos theory, general nonlinear systems and artificial life. recent increased interest in these topics is illustrated by the many international conferences. Game symposium a game of story attribution the game consists of 3 simple rules and 7 easy steps. 3 simple rules 1 the larp is always referred to as `the piece' or some similar wording that in and of itself stresses that we are now seeing the larp as a single storywhole where everything is planned and intended. accordingly the producers of the larp are referred to as `the author', `the larpwright' or `the director'. 2 as a speaker of the table you must under no circumstances refer to your own experience as a player in the larp. you must act as if you were present as audience only, not as a participant. if you want to refer to something that your role did, simply say something like "i think everybody is missing the shift that happened in the scene where jimbo goads his fellow orcs into attacking the convoy". remember, however, always to have the focus of creating a story-whole. 3 it is encouraged for the speakers of the table to take on different roles or styles of story attribution. in this way the game becomes a mini-larp in itself. you can be the socialist critic, the hip fashionmagazine reporter, the art nouveau literate, the layman, etc. act and attribute accordingly. 7 simple steps 1 place yourselves around a table or in a similar comfortable situation. it is recommended to be no more than 8 people and no less than 4, at least if this is your first game. 2 appoint a host of the symposium. the host stewards who gets to talk when and how much and makes sure that nobody gets lost in their interpretation. 3 the host gives a presentation of all the speakers present. he tells from where in the piece they were situated as audience and, if you invoked rule #3 above, what critical inclination the speaker has. 4 the host now gives a swift presentation of the brute facts of the piece. what happened when, how much and for how long. be as specific and to the point as you can be, so you don't accidentally push the interpretations in a certain direction. think of yourself as a serious news speaker or as a stiff, british clerk giving a debriefing. 5 on request from the host, the first speaker presents his interpretation of the meaning and story of the piece. the host asks the table to comment on the interpretation, ask questions and discuss it. he makes sure that not too much times goes with this discussion by inviting the next speaker the hardest critic of the current speaker for example ; to give his interpretation. 6 when all speakers have presented their interpretation of the piece the discussion is open for general criticism and evaluation such as the authors ability to get his points across, the narrational economy, the quality of the set, the actors, the morale of the piece etc. 7 let all hell loose, get drinks and talk about the scenario in any way you like: personal anecdotes, kudos to brilliant or funny performances or situations, slap backs and enjoy yourselves like you use to. have fun.1 163.

December 26th, 2005 happy post-christmas. my holiday wish to everybody is. may your drinks be stiff and be purchased by somebody else, and may bill o'reilly suffer a scandal that ruins his career. peace be unto everybody, and a happy, healthy, prosperous and safe 2006 to you. seriously and i'm not even drunk right now ; . as for matutinal reverie, i'm still working on the assembly, but i'm also editing a bit more. i'm back at my desk today after a little break for the holidays, and about to hit the 4 hour mark on the sequence timeline for a second time. which means that, again, i'll chop out another hour before continuing to assemble. also, i had a little scare the last time that i was working. the final cut pro 4.5 project for the movie wouldn't open, and i was getting an error message. after 10 minutes of panic and 2 hastily slurped-down cigarettes, i went into the autosave vault, and opened the second-to-last autosave the most recent one was also corrupted ; . i don't know what happened, although i most thankful that i didn't lose the entire project. i only lost 40 minutes' worth of work, which ain't that bad. btw, stereolab is going to be touring in 2006 in support of their upcoming release fab four suture. they'll be here for two concerts in march, and i plan on attending both. lastly, enjoy a little treat courtesy of andy samberg and chris parnell. you can also download it for free from the itunes music store.

And unlike erstwhile uncivilised timorese and african soldiers who bathed in the lahane river, he european soldier in dili simply did not babe. little wonder then that the percentage of mortality in military hospitals in timor was hen three times the rate of macau or equal to that of mozambique. even the availability of quinine, he observed, did not always alleviate the dangers of fever. 38 writing of the state of health of the colony in the 1880s, anna forbes, whose observations on timor are often more perceptive than those of her naturalist husband commented: no traveller will of choice visit dilly, for its reputation as the unhealthiest port of the archipelago is not undeserved, and the report that one night passed in its miasmal atmosphere may result fatally deters any who would, except of necessity, go there. those who are appointed here make up their minds, shortly after arrival, that they will go as soon as possible. feverstricken people and places are recognisable at a glance the pale faces and enduring air of the residents explain the lifeless town and dilapidated buildings.39 again, between december 1893 and february 1894, at least 1, 000 people died from the direct or indirect affects of a cholera outbreak. in maubara this was attributable to the rotting corpses strewn around after the bloody suppression of the rebellion, but dili, manatuto and other centres were also affected.40 cholera, malaria, tb, dysentery, still endemic in the twentieth century, were undoubtedly a major scourge and demographic check in the last. state of the missions no discussion on colonial process would be complete without a sense of the development of civil-state relations, particularly -in the case of timor- on the status of the missions and their pastoral and educative role. while we have mentioned the pioneering role of the dominican mission in the solor zone and on the island of timor, in the period following the shift of capital from lifau to dili, the number of missionaries o timor suffered a gradual decline, never more than eleven, and by 1812 reduced to two including the bishop who resided in manatuto. in 1831, the visiting missionary group from portugal bound for macau observed that only five or six priests remained on the island. 41 for 20 years, commencing in 1834, all remaining missionaries were ordered expelled from timor leaving the crown-appointed governor as the exclusive mediator between the administration and the people. this measure, decreed by dom pedro iv and ushered in by the liberal revolution in portugal itself a now on from the ideas unleashed by the french revolution-further set back the albeit restricted legacy of the dominicans in timor, in any case mainly goanese whose reputation over the years had become deeply sullied. while the church was one institution that would indelibly imprint timorese identity in the future, th ecclesiastical legacy was somewhat mixed at this juncture, especially given the propensity of the church to enter into compromises with local traditions and superstitions, a shortcoming which appalled the reigning religious orthodoxy in macau. in this period the pioneering portuguese mission on solor and flores was reported to have been abandoned.42 0n paper, at least, the anticlerical mood was overridden on 26 december 1854 in the form of a royal decree allowing for the dispatch of priests from portugal and india to both timor and mozambique because of "lack and detriment to civilization and disgust of inhabitants deprived of religious consolation and worship". 43 even so, as governor de castro wrote in 1861, the mission in timor itself was almost abandoned. only two missionaries remained and they seldom left the relative comfort of dili, whether for illness or other reasons while the mass of the population lived in "paganism" and "superstition". 44 in general terms, this situation prevailed until 1874 when, in line with the apostolic letter universis orbis eclesiis of 15 june, timor was transferred from the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of goa to the diocese of macau and, in the same year, pe. antonio joaquim de medeiros, rector of the s.jose seminary in macau, was appointed as visador with the brief to proceed to timor to take stock of the missions with a view to their rehabilitation. even so, archival records for march 1877 and again 188 1 reveal the state of discord between the civil and ecclesiastical authorities in timor. in 1882 the bishop complained at lack of government support for the mission. in any case it owed to the government charter of a "celebrated" dutch schooner that the party of seven and paradise poker. Theologians, whose intellect seeks delight in formulating dogmas suited to their emotions. there are others, again, who find the greatest delight in intellectual wrestling. these scholastics have recourse to interpretations based on logic, rhetoric, grammar and especially authority to support their respective beliefs. last come those who fail to find in any of them the satisfaction they want and who seek refuge in mystic ecstasies, revelations and contacts. all these courses howsoever satisfying and convincing to individuals, have most signally failed to bring peace to the world at large. two thousand five hundred years of buddhism have not softened the chinese and japanese hearts. two thousand years of christianity have not prevented wars in europe. one thousand five hundred years of islam have brought no peace to the world. nor has hinduism, or jainism, with their doctrine of ahimsa non-violence ; , which boasts of greater antiquity, seen the reign of harmony and calmness among them. on the other hand we find that more social discord, hatred and suffering are caused by religious differences than economic distress and political disagreement. again, with more of religion, bloodshed on larger scales has been caused and that at shorter intervals, wars involving more and more races of the earth, entailing harrowing destruction, in ever-increasing measure, of innocent women and children. what is more discouraging is the fact that religion has in it the seed of disintegration and disharmony. the single christianity has multiplied itself into about three hundred sects. the single muhamadanism has divided itself into about eighty sects as they say. the one buddha's teaching has branched off into scores of denominations. lastly the history of hinduism reveals the fact that it has at least four hundred different sects. religion follows the natural process, from "unity to multiplicity and uniformity to variety." religion integrates individuals into small groups but disintegrates larger groups. and its most valuable function of controlling the moral life, declines as men become more and more intellectual. and therefore religious reformers stress more the need for mystic and meditative life, renouncing the world. but we find that though men show regard for morality, within the group, outside it they ignore both morality and humanity. what is worse, different religions have different standards of morality or ethics. next, has any religion on earth or any monk or high priest ever stopped a war or cured any social suffering, or averted any human calamity! nor has mysticism, not to say anything of theology and scholasticism, succeeded in curing or controlling such misfortunes of society in general. the present war in particular has taught the irrefutable truth that no christian prayers could save the churches and the worshipers in them from bombs. no mohammedean recitations or observances, no sufism could avert the calamity of earthquakes in turkey or rumania. no hindu rituals or japas of yogis could save the people of bihar and peshawar from similar catastrophes a few years ago, not to say anything of the desecrations of numberless temples by non-hindus. if mysticism appeals readily to the largest number it does so because it demands not deep inquiry or thinking which is always so taxing even to the most intellectual of men. mental rest is sought by all, fools and philosophers alike. what however makes mysticism specially attractive seems to be that any man can get all the satisfaction he needs as easily as possible and can boldly declare that what he has known is the highest or the absolute, by spying that it is 'indescribable.' nevertheless, people still advocate religion in general as a remedy for they jump from the incontestable fact of their personal or individual satisfaction to the false conclusion that it will save society and mankind in general. art is closely allied to religion. like mysticism, it brings inexpressible joy which is an unquestionable fact. this has made many believe that art also helps man to make contact with the highest being or the absolute. this they support by the fact that at the height of enjoyment men become unconscious. all this is true. but has any artist till now cured mankind of the madness of war or averted any calamity in the world? on the other hand it has become the.
