Page forty four attempt by the park service to manage the river in the general public interest. but in the long run the big outfitters are on the losing side. as should be apparent to everyone by now. we are approaching a new age of frugality in the national economy; motorized recreation in its many forms snowmobiles, trailbikes, dune buggies, off-road vehicles, motorboats, etc. ; must sooner or later be phased out of existence. the commercial river outfitters will be forced by economics, if not by the park service, to junk their outboard motors, dispose of their giant rafts, use smaller boats and-sharing the profits--employ more oarsmen. they'll learn to live with it. all concerned will be better off because of it--the big outfitter, whose business will be reduced to the family-size enterprise that it should be; the boatmen, who will find more jobs available; and last and not of least importance, the paying passengers, who will see the grand canyon as it should be seen, at a leisurely pace, in quietude, as members of small groups. private river runners versus commercial river runners; motors versus oars; these are two of the hairiest, prickliest issues that boatmen and outfitters, the government, the politicians, and the general public must somehow deal with. but bending the boat! why should emotions involved? the reader may ask; surely these things can be settled on the basis of common sense and equity, with the aid of an ordinary desk-top calculator. not so; these are questions of profitability, of money, in some cases of big money--and therefore, quite naturally and understandably, blood is stirred and passions rise. some people get very emotional about money. ; take the impossible question of fairness, for example. is it fair that the small outfitter should be forced out of business by the big outfitter? or fair that superior managerial ability should be penalized in some way so as to allow the small outfitter perhaps less hard-driving as an entrepreneur but a nicer guy, offering his customers a more enjoyable experience, who knows? ; to remain in business? is it fair that currently established outfitters be allowed, keep a virtual monopoly, through the government's permit - franchise system, of the use of what is supposed to be a public. In that last possible moment, as they fell out of sight of the machine-gunner, nancy felt agony pluck at her left arm, as a ricocheting bullet hit her. dazedly she shut the door behind her and roared out her pain. in the fluorescent light, she could see blood already staining the cloth of her sleeve. the pain was intense, burning bright as a star, a pain more intense than any she could remember, and she moaned at it. the sleeve was torn raggedly open and beneath, soaked in blood, the wreckage of her arm. the whole arm hung limply. coldly, she judged that it was broken, but there was nothing actually visible to support that; everything was covered in bright red liquid that seemed to pour without limit from the devastation. red it was, as she had intellectually expected, but all her instincts, used to her usual frame, expected grey. it was that color, more than anything else - pain, shock or blood loss, that locked her into a horrified nauseated daze. she stood, benumbed, jaw agape, just staring at the carnage, while her head swam, and her heartbeat pounded in her ears. clean, sharp, excruciating agony cut like a white hot blade through the glamour enfolding her. carol had grabbed her roughly by her intact arm, and the jolt was enough. keep moving, the command was low, but almost venomous. my arm. even in her daze, nancy could feel how lame that sounded. she averted her gaze, not wishing to gather up the strands of that morbid fascination, and followed her girlfriend's lead. around a cross-way they paused, but there was no sound of doors opening or being forced, no hail of fire to follow them and as her motive power ceased, nancy let herself slide to the floor. let's have a look at that arm. nancy thrust the offending limb in carol's direction, and smiled weakly at the gasp of disgust it evoked. nancy slipped her right arm from its sleeve, and together, they edged the other arm out. she didn't look as the operation proceeded, though the wound had been sprayed with anaesthetic, she could feel that something was going on, something that didn't translate into any sensation she could lay name to; and how it felt dissuaded her from watching. carol didn't look too healthy when she declared the job done, and held out the gory and misshapen lump of metal responsible for the damage, now thankfully hidden under a mass of rapidly congealing quasiflesh. i hope you know what you were doing of there. so, carol's reply was brusque, do i. you might have to do the same for me someday. now shut up and let me put that arm in a sling. thanks, tricia. nancy whispered carol's true name, and struggled with her jacket, to drape it over her left shoulder. then, casually, almost as a throwaway asked, you want to come over to my room after? sure thing, nancy. that's if you feel you can manage with that arm. just try me. she smiled, and then became serious. we're going to have to avoid doing any climbing now. if the matts don't hold the gallery bridge, going by the tunnel, and then over the bridge would be the best. and if they do? panic. try some other way out. or scream to the yogis. 13. What are reglas poker points and why do i want them. The dade county courthouse in juno was a very substantial two story wooden structure. most say it extended thirty feet north and south, and thirty-five feet east and west. c.c. chillingworth is on record in a 1932 speech that the courthouse was forty by sixty-five feet. whatever size it was, it had three coats of white paint, and it became the most notable landmark in that vicinity. there were only three rooms on the first floor. the general county office was across the front, occupied by the clerk of the circuit court quimby, the county judge a.e. heyser, and the county tax assessor. in the rear were two smaller rooms for juries. when not in use by juries, one small room was used by the county tax collector. the titusville law firm of robbins, graham, and chillingworth used the other small room. the resident partner was c.c. chillingworth, the father of our slain circuit judge. the firm traded free legal advice to the county for free rent. there was a stairway against the rear wall, which led to the second story. only one large room occupied the entire second floor. the largest in south florida at the time, served as a courtroom, a church, a lodge hall, and a ballroom. meetings and dances could be held for .00 a night. circuit judge john d. broome would hold court there every six months. his circuit extended from miami to daytona on the coast, and west of sanford, deland, orlando and kissimmee. judge broome was considered to be a most kindly gentleman. when his court work was finished, he would not be back for another six months. the terms of the circuit court were great events in the life of juno and the entire lower east coast of florida. jurors from miami were usually highly irritated. they had to come up from biscayne bay by sailboat along the ocean, and would enter lake worth through the old lake worth inlet and proceed north to the juno dock for jury duty. the courthouse was then about a one-half mile walk inland from the juno dock down a sandy road. the jurors didn't usually have much to do and could hardly wait until the ten-year county seat election rolled around. in 1900, miami finally had the vote to move the dade county courthouse back to miami. near the southwest corner of the courthouse yard stood the famous dade county jail. it was a small low one story building, eighteen feet by twenty feet in size, with a row of iron cells along the north side of the structure. in between the jail and the railroad, there was later built a small structure to be used by the jailer and his wife for a home and a kitchen for feeding the prisoners. sometime prior to 1907, every building in juno including the old courthouse and jail, were swept away by a raging forest fire. flagler's railroad had bypassed juno, and the fire finished it. the town simply vanished and card poker.
What makes a great cornering bike is not straightforward. yes, the latest, sharpest race replica may respond to the slightest movement and carry incomprehensible corner speed, giving it the most accomplished handling in its class. but an almost faultless and clinical ability may be too sterile, a touch removed from the rider. as if you're just there to make up the sprung weight and keep the seat warm while the bike gets on with doing all the work. how a bike feels, the satisfaction gained from balancing a machine through a turn and the sense of achievement you get from doing it are important too. nothing else on the road can take the fairly basic task of changing direction and involve you so much or offers the same buzz as a motorcycle, so rider involvement is a vital part of the cornering process. that's why a vast touring device that leans far more than it has any right to and surprises you on every ride may satisfy more than an accurate but slightly uninvolving sportsbike. so we have two elements to consider the physical cornering capabilities of the bike and the human element. there's also one other key area to consider: the risk factor. the quickestturning bike in the world would be of little pleasure to many if it wriggled like fresh-caught.

With truly witty anecdotes, steve silberberg puts his ability to woo women and the readers of his book on display. the author describes, mostly for dim-witted, unromantic men, how to romance a woman by being creative in designing a date. for example, silberberg illustrates one date he went on that included a train ride, a small boom box and take-out dinner. his ideas are comical, yet his theme is valuable. romance, he describes, is easy if you think outside the box. silberberg is president of the internet lost and found web site elfsearch and continues to go on unconventional, unbelievably creative dates.
At 4: 00 any given day, one only had to look as far as the local video arcade should they want to find young peter ellis. video games were his passion. in them he could escape reality and become a king. to peter, video games represented infinite worlds with infinite possibilities. one day he could be a space commando, ridding the universe of hideous alien invaders and the next he could be the fastest racing car driver who had ever lived. today, however, peter was the greatest fighter in the world. for the last fifteen minutes, he had been dispatching opponents with a skill and ease that would have made bruce lee envious. having worked his way to the final round through a series of elimination bouts, peter was now facing off against gregor, a large half man half cyborg juggernaut bent on destroying peter and dominating the earth. as peter traded blows and evaded attacks, a large crowd began to gather around the machine to watch the show. few could match peter's skill at arcade games. while he had limited sporting ability and was regarded as somewhat of a day-dreamer at school, his eye hand co-ordination and lightening fast reflexes made him a god in the realms of virtual entertainment. while the crowd around him stood cheering and shouting their encouragement, peter prepared to end his match with his special combination attack that very few players knew, let alone having the ability to execute. suddenly, peter was slammed into the machine as something or someone hit him from behind. no! wait! not now! too late, he had missed his chance. the second had passed and he stood there, staring at the screen in disbelief as the words "game over" appeared in big red letters. for three-weeks peter had spent every afternoon at the arcade trying to beat that damn game and this time he had come so close only to be cheated out of his victory at the crucial second. as peter turned to confront the source of his defeat, a and poker run. Unocal! after inking deals to spend over 0 billion in iran for natural gas, $billions in venezuela for oil development, chile and peru for copper, and mexico for steel, china is now eyeing for unocal's oil. "no way jose, oil is a strategic asset", the general american public and congress shout. perhaps the press forgot to mention majority of unocal assets are in asia indonesia ; . so how did unocal acquire this strategic asset from indonesia, 3rd most populous country with 500 million people? it's the past you say? ok, then why does us keep pressing russia everyday to open russia's oilfields for bidding? let's step back from this "national asset talk". unocal, like any other listed companies, is a private property. the company belongs to shareholders. unocal is not the property of us. can the government stop you from selling your house to a chinese bidder? china was smart to choose unocal for the asian oil assets, but she was dumb to not privately negotiate the purchase of just unocal's asian oil assets. let me be blunt about the trend, for a company with global assets and sales, being incorporated in us vs another country is like registering your car in california vs new jersey. the car title belongs to you i.e. shareholders ; while state registration is a matter bureaucracy. of course if people can register their car anywhere, it becomes a problem for california us ; that charges 2 times more in registration fees tax ; than say new jersey flat tax in many parts of the world ; . let's expand on this. intel and umc : portland journals portland stories 2005 03 28 daily47 paul otellini, who will become intel's ceo in may, testified at a hearing of the president's advisory panel on federal tax reform on march 31 2005, saying that building a u.s. chip "fab" for manufacturing 300-millimeter wafers would cost intel billion more over the 10-year life of the fab than building its equivalent in asia or europe. that difference is due primarily to taxes, otellini told the president's tax panel. he compared the united states' corporate tax rate of 35 percent with other countries' incentives. israel has a 10 percent tax rate, and also offers a two-year tax holiday, as well as up to percent in grants for capital investment. malaysia has a 10-year tax holiday, and ireland's corporate tax rate is 12.5 percent. china offers a 5-year tax holiday. you wonder what's next for intel after it moves all the fabs out of us? check out the capital and technology infusion in china topic in the feb issue, i copied some parts here. taiwan's economy rests on high tech, and the jewels of taiwan are tsm taiwan semiconductor manufacturing ; and umc united mircoelectronics ; , the two world's largest contract microchip makers, each boasting market capitalization of over us billion. keep in mind taiwan is a mere 0 billion economy. : yahoo.reuters mtfh63485 2005-02-18 0757-51 tp242731 newsml. The ever-optimists in us want to believe that, for any given problem, the market, when left alone, will typically find a solution. the good news is that the birth of the platform company model, and the trend whereas western companies say "we take the profits, you can have the jobs" has been so recent, and yet so powerful at the same time, that most governments have not had a chance to react to it yet? ; . the market has been left free to do what it does best: adjust to new realities. assuming that we are right in our statement above that "the rich keep on getting richer". then it follows that whatever the rich buy should be going up in price much more rapidly than what poorer people buy for there will be more competition for the goods services that rich people buy ; . incidentally, this has been one of the longest running themes of gavekal research charles first started grumbling in 1999 that "it has never been so expensive to be rich"! ; . as anatole wrote last summer: "at its simplest, therefore, the disagreement over "true" inflation simply reflects people's tendency to focus on prices that are rising and forget about the ones that are going down. but the extent and persistence of the divergence between service and goods prices in the past decade also suggests a less obvious and more important story in three parts. the first part of this story relates to china's entry into the global economy. by becoming the workshop of the world, china has pushed down the prices of all mass-produced manufactured goods. the virtually limitless supply of cheap labour and capital in china, and the chronic mis-allocations of capital will ensure that manufactured goods continue to get cheaper, not only in britain but around the world. but the relentless downward pressure on manufactured prices from china has resulted in a second effect which is less widely understood, even among economists: cheap imports from china have actually pushed up the prices of many goods and services which the chinese cannot or do not produce - either because they lack the resources for example, oil ; or the legal infrastructure financial ser vices ; or simply because some things cannot be traded for example, housing, healthcare and education ; . people who see china purely as a source of downward pressure on prices forget that overall inflation in any economy is essentially determined by the availability of money. if monetary policy is successfully run as it is britain ; to produce an overall inflation rate of 2%, while the prices of manufactured goods are persis and poker texas. Tension, but is for the most part performed in line with the general atmosphere of monotony. characters sit impotently in chairs; stand patiently waiting for others to arrive, helplessly searching for acceptable ways in which to pass the time. there are a few points at which this atmosphere of restraint is shockingly torn, most notably when hedda suddenly reprimands mrs elvsted for calling her by her surname, with a sudden and electrifying moment of contact. yet ultimately this is a play about failing to fruitfully connect with those around you. whilst topham's direction faultlessly portrays this idea of interpersonal atrophy, in which no one seems to really understand each other, it unfortunately results in a production that feels a little flat. nonetheless, the acting is patently superb. julia clark is sinister and calculating as hedda, always presenting to the world a perfect porcelain face that hides the dangerous thoughts beneath. holly strickland is charming as the slightly pathetic mrs elvsted. from the first moment you see her she plays the victim with childish powerlessness, an inevitable target for hedda's toying. this makes her character's progression through the play one of the most satisfying to witness, not only because of the myriad of marvellous period costumes we encounter.

Free inquiry, and therefore speech, is essential to our core values and purposes. this is true whether the inquiry involves sensitive, controversial, or even painful topics and issues for members of the community or broader world ; . but the purpose of such free inquiry and speech is to add to our intellectual understanding of complex issues." these are the words of thomas h. jackson and charles e. phelps, president and provost respectively, at the university of rochester in 2002 when that campus experienced an ugly act of intolerance. their message was sound and resonates with us here today. it calls us to honor our history of intellectual freedom and to pursue truth and to speak to that truth. as leaders at umbc, we must also maintain our own free speech rights to condemn incidents like the defacing of the 2005 homecoming court signs flyers as hateful, vile and cowardly acts that have no place in america and certainly no place at an institution as fine as the university of maryland baltimore county. this behavior and any like it directed at anyone, is condemned in the strongest possible terms. these behaviors cut into the values for which umbc has become known and of which we are most proud. as our president, dr. freeman a. hrabowski, iii states, "umbc is a historically diverse institution, " one that cultivates that diversity to become stronger and to best serve maryland and the nation. it is important that all members of our campus community make it unmistakably clear that such destructive and hateful behavior has no place in this institution of higher learning and really, no place in our society. sincerely, dr. charles j. fey the writer is vice president for student affairs at umbc. morning setting up, running, and cleaning up the my chemical romance and lewis black shows and we weren't mentioned in the retriever. ; in addition, i think it is unfair for ms. deal to blame seb, the student events board, for lighting, sound, and audience disinterest. any problems with the sound were not to be blamed of seb. i'd also like to point out that most of the audience was there to see lewis black. if the audience refused to pay attention to matt morrison, that's not seb's fault. from my parents' reaction, it was matt's material that caused him to gain bad reviews, not lighting, sound, or rude audience members. seb's decision to keep part of the lights on was a safety issue. we had a lot of people to get in and with the rain, things were slow at the door. we wanted the 3500 people to get in and find a space in a packed house and to try and honor our commitment to the crowd to keep things on time. our intent was not to slight matt in any way. we have worked with matt several times and worked hard with the management of lewis black to get him some stage time. lastly, i would like to note that ms. deal's encouragement for other alumni to rethink donating to the university over this one event ; is inappropriate. whereas the university is one of research and academics, i highly doubt that poor lighting for a comedian at an event on campus is grounds for ceasing any donations from alumni. given the amount of time, effort, and planning that went into homecoming weekend, which is largely for alumni, i think it is unreasonable to focus on one part of the entire weekend to cast the entire university as unworthy of donations. it seems immature to make such an arguement, if you ask me. ; but please, if you have any questions, concerns, or comments about homecoming weekend or any events by the student events board, please direct them to seb so that we can better respond, rather than through the newspaper. eric grollman the writer is secretary of the student events board seb.
Despite the dearth of research into the impact of gambling, including electronic gaming machines, on economic activity, there has been no shortage of opinions offered on this issue. urban myth, supported at best by anecdotes and at worst by preconceived convictions, add little to our understanding. commenting on the american scene, goodman 1995, p.xi ; offered the following: huge portions of discretionary consumer dollars are being diverted into gambling, resulting in losses to restaurant and entertainment industries, movie theatres, sports events, clothing and furniture stores, and other businesses. this assertion was repeated several times by goodman but at no time was this claim supported. similar claims have been made by retailers and their retail associations it would be fair to say that such views are widely held and reflect commonly held views but it is equally reasonable to seek out hard data to quantify such effects. at the local level in victoria, australia, there have been a number of media comments about the impact of gambling, particularly electronic gaming machines egms ; , by industry and corporate leaders associated with the retail industry. reports have linked gambling to the downgrading of the valuation of regional shopping centres, a marked decline in retail trade and the closing down of retail businesses. to shed some light on this issue it was decided to examine the economic impact of egms on retail trade in the state of victoria. with a history of four years of egms, it was felt that such a study was possible and timely. it was decided to examine this impact, not only on victorian retail trade overall, but also on the seven retail industry groups defined under the australian and new zealand standard industry classification anzsic ; . the study was then widened to examine the 19 retail subgroups in order to better isolate and pinpoint these effects. No-limit reglas poker in no-limit poker there is no maximum to the amount a player can bet. the minimum, however, is the big blind. when a player wants to raise another player, he must raise with at least the bet of the other player. when a player wants to call, but does not have enough chips to equal the amount that is bet, he is "all-in". this means that the player plays for all the chips he has left. pot-limit poker pot-limit is the most popular variant of the poker game in europe. it is quite similar to no-limit poker but there are certain key differences.
