Gram is a reasonably witty blend of character and fanciful action. in the first episode, the heroine battles female robots constructed by an old rival of her father's. in the second, she takes on genetically mutated animals at a ski resort. in the third, the villains from the previous two episodes team up, using another monster-creating machine, and the heroine has to use teamwork to defeat them. in the freestanding episode, she has to stop a villain from constructing a huge robot out of video game parts and must also worry about who is going to accompany her to a school dance. the picture on the three combined episodes is in letterboxed format only, with an aspect ratio of about 1.66: 1 and an accommodation for enhanced 16: 9 playback. the freestanding episode is in full screen format. on all of them, the picture is bright and crisp. the 5.1-channel dolby digital sound brings a dimensionality to the music, but not much else. there is optional english subtitling, a christy carlson romano music video and a complicated game. burns & allen the three black-and-white films universal has collected on george burns gracie allen 3 movies 22654, ; , here comes cookie from 1935, six of a kind from 1934 and love in bloom from 1935, are sufficiently different from one another to make a playable, and enjoyable, triple bill. allen plays the daughter of a wealthy retiree in here comes cookie. contrary to the asleep-at-thewheel jacket copy, burns is the retiree's secretary. anyway, allen is given control of the fortune and through logic only her character could generate, turns her townhouse mansion into a crash pad for theater people, and then into a theater itself. the premise allows the 66-minute film to include a number of vaudeville acts, and blend them into a basic screwball setting with a number of funny routines and a narrative that almost makes sense. charlie ruggles and mary boland are a couple on their second honeymoon, intent upon taking a cross-country road trip in six of a kind, only to have burns and allen come along for the ride, continually upsetting any opportunity to renew their matrimonial bliss. after a number of amusing adventures, they arrive in a nevada town where the sheriff is played by w.c. fields, and fields has routines with ruggles and with burns, and shares the screen with allen, too, though their hoped-for interaction is minimal. burns' antagonism towards allen is more subdued in this film than it is in the other two. there is also some embezzled money, to give the 63-minute feature a little tension and an ending. fields is not at his best, but with such a cast--alison skipworth rounds out the sextet as a foil for fields--the film would be difficult to resist even if it weren't as amusing as it manages to be. burns and allen are top billed in love in bloom, but actually play supporting parts. the primary narrative is about a carnival girl, played by dixie lee, who runs off to the city and meets a young composer, played by joe morrison. they fall in love and get jobs at a music store, a pleasant romantic arc that includes a couple catchy songs. burns plays lee's brother and allen is his wife. to complicate the final act, the father of lee's character gets her to leave the man she loves and return to the carnival, but don't worry, there is a happy ending. while burns and allen only have a couple routines in the 75minute feature, one, in which they are stopped by a motorcycle cop who is ultimately confounded by allen, is the highpoint of the dvd. the picture quality on here comes cookie and love in bloom is very good. the image is sharp, contrasts are well defined and wear is minimal. six of a kind is a bit more aged, with softer lines at times and a little more wear, but it is still in decent condition. the monophonic sound is adequate on all three films, and they are accompanied by optional english, french and spanish subtitles. a trailer for six of a kind is also included. doh! after the inspired second season of the simpsons aug 02 ; , the creators stumbled with the lackluster episodes that have been gathered in the four-platter the simpsons the complete third sea.
