S: ali, what inspired your move from play writing to poetry, and now on to novel writing? a: i started as a songwriter for my band, sacred heart of elvis. in the 80s. i ended up living with a director in toronto, and found at ; theatre parties, no-one would talk to you unless you had a "project". so i started making up "projects" as a joke, and that led to writing and acting at ; a couple of fringe shows in the early 90s. i wrote a trilogy that that was based on. the marquis de sade. the first play was an adaptation of philosophy in the bedroom. that was followed by two plays, each progressively more abstract. in the last one. the actors were complaining that the lines were too "poetic". so, after it closed, i thought "well, maybe this isn't the right medium for what i want to say. i should write outside the collaborative process of theatre, explore, see what happens." s: where did you hear about the 3-day novel contest, and are you nervous about the experience? a: i think i heard about it around the same time i was attending ksa. my friend clayton mccann he's a madman poet, lives in victoria, has some pieces coming out in filling station soon ; and i talked about. doing the contest together. somehow it never happened, so i'm glad i'm finally going to do it. with a bunch of cameras around there's no way i can get lazy and say "nah.let's order sushi and watch day of the locust again". so i'm not nervous, exactly.though book television seems to be doing their best to freak us out. i got an e-mail that was two pages of all the things they intend to do to fuck with our heads. we're sleeping in bunk beds. they plan to make us move computers. they're bringing in animals, they're going to let customers hover over your shoulder--if anything makes me snap, that will!. but ; when i think about the dives sacred heart used to play in. how bad could it get at chapters? that's like being scared you're gonna get beat up at earl's. as long as no-one throws a bottle i'll be fine. s: how much preparation have you done for the contest and what are you allowed to bring with you? a: we're only allowed 2 pieces of regular paper to bring in with us, as well as source material. i've been printing my notes really small. the story could end up far away from the planned ending, but at least i have one just in case i get lost. 50 gaycalgary magazine #35, september 2006.

Disposition whose development the women in our study described. recall such situations as the one where della's looks were singled out for sexual innuendo by her professor chapter 5 ; and the encounter between sam and annette that karen recounted. men, too, were vulnerable to having their attractiveness insulted by women, to having their social worth belittled, to bearing the brunt of symbolic violence. women could accept their gifts, their attention, and their good treatment and still not reciprocate with any show of affection. they could refuse to allow the relationship to become more emotionally or physically intimate. women could insult them verbally as well, referring to them as "pricks, " "nerds, " "creeps, " and other unappealing names. nonetheless, our studies showed that women's treatment by men had a greater impact upon evaluations of their social worth than the relationship reversed. that is, the gender ideology discussed here had more importance for women than for men. on the face of it, the romantic sexual relationship that constitutes the standard of meaning in the model--the pairing of attractive people who give and get equally, and the expected outcome of intimacy and prestige for both--seems to favor neither the woman nor the man. but, in the student world of the late 1970s and early 1980s, equality was not the rule. women's attractiveness and prestige were far more dependent upon their relationships with men than vice versa. men had diverse sources of symbolic capital. men on the basketball team and men of potential ; wealth, for example, had sources of attractiveness and prestige that were largely independent of how women treated them. there was no such alternative source for women. participation on women's sports teams--no matter how many championships the teams won--added little to the athletes' attractiveness to male students; the same was true for women's participation in student government or university performance groups. the playing field for romantic encounters was not equal. when sam snubbed her, annette had little else to fall back on for validation of her social worth. had she similarly snubbed him, sam, a well-known athlete, would not have been as bereft. it is clearly fairly easy to create spaces, figured by the world of romance, in which men are especially privileged. this easy access to privilege is a consequence of men's more numerous sources of symbolic capital. yet other social and material contexts may affect the ways popular ideologies of romance are played out in particular sites. one woman in.

| Next morning, october 21, 1 had an appointment with mrs. virginia hale--a upi stringer and a reporter for the haverhill, massachusetts, gazette. she lived in a generous ranch house on a trim residential street in hampton, not far from the ocean. mrs. hale was an experienced, observer. she knew every conventional flight pattern of the nearby portsmouth air base, as well as the commercial air lanes reserved for airliners on their way to boston. she took me immediately to her kitchen window, set above her spotless stainless-steel sink, and pointed out the portion of the sky in which she first saw the unknown craft. she had kept it in clear view over a five- to'lo-minute period. she pointed to a soapish smear on a pane of her ivindow. "i put my finger in the dishwater the minute i saw this thing in the sky, " she told me, "because i wanted to clearly mark the position where it was when it first came into view. the only thing i had handy to do this was the soapy water, and you can still see it there--faintly of course. but it's there." it was. enough of a mark to line up a fix on a certain portion of the sky, above the rooftops of her neighbors' homes and out over the atlantic a short distance. it was from this general portion of the sky, i recalled, that sergeant farnsworth had described the craft coming in over the two hysterical young men on the hampton boulevard that early morning when they had been whisked to the coast guard station to make their report. "i don't know the date i saw this, " mrs. hale told me, after she had poured a cup of black coffee in the kitchen. "i'd say two to three weeks ago. i was standing right here by the sink, about 25 after 6 in the evening. it was dusk, it wasn't quite dark, and there was still plenty of light. the reason it caught my eye was because it was bright and because it was going slow, very slow. not at all like the path of the planes as they come over. so i automatically figured something is wrong. then--it stopped dead over that house--" she pointed to the roof of her neighbor's house, just out the kitchen window. "it was about three times the height of that chimney, " she continued, "and it hovered there. now you know four minutes is a long time and that's why i hesitate to say that. but i'm pretty sure it was that long. then i marked the window with the smear from the dishwater, so i could remember where i lined up the spot." we moved outside, as she reenacted what had happened. "at the moment the object stopped i came out here on the terrace. now, i would estimate that it was out beyond the coast guard station which is right on the shore, just over these houses here. after it started up again, it moved much faster. the b-47's go further east and further north before they cut back. and when this thing cut back toward the southwest, coming directly back and losing altitude fast, coming in really fast, and coming, almost, i swear i thought it was coming right at me. of course, to be frank, i was hoping it would land. and it cut over this house behind us here, and i knew i would lose sight of it. but also, it was going so fast i thought it was going to crash." "could you get a clear look at it at this time?" "well, at this point i could see from underneath, too. it was dome-shaped, and underneath, it was flat. its altitude was now about twice the height of that chimney. by the time it was over here, i could see the bottom and die front of it plainly. and here 1 got a full'view-of the bottom and the back and tail, maybe you'd call it a fin. then i went'into the house and looked out 112.

The boundaries of the group's major regions of operation and development reflect both its historical roots and its strategy of growth through acquisitions. in the beginning there was france, whose two major brands of anise-based products, ricard and pernod, gave their names to the group. expansion then took place into europe, the second strategic region, which today generates the largest share of sales and revenues. from these solid foundations, pernod ricard took on the conquest of the americas, asia and the rest of the world, regions which contributed the strongest growth over the past financial year.

Preferring to stay in her shuttle these days. simon could imagine that for a woman whose physical appearance was part of her career, malnutrition took a devastating toll. "eat up, doc, " mal called from his seat at the head of the table. "eat up `fore jayne takes your share." jayne grunted, having already wolfed down his meal in seven bites or less. though they looked small, these protein bars were packed with nutritional supplements and the seven bites they were given still had over 1000 calories. most of the crew ate slowly, trying to garner some satisfaction from that knowledge. to jayne, it looked small, so it wasn't enough. "good morning, simon, " kaylee bubbled as he took the seat next to river. river snuck a peak at him and giggled from underneath her cascade of brown hair. "good morning, " he said, reaching for his breakfast and a cup of shepherd book's make-shift tea. "what are you laughing at?" "kaylee told a joke, " river said, her voice a sweet melody. it always overjoyed simon when he saw river lucid and laughing, like a normal girl. "apples and doctors and good aim." "well don't spoil the punch line, silly, " kaylee laughed, punching river lightly on the arm. "apples, huh?" wash interrupted. "i could go for some apples right now." "they'll come, " river said, looking cryptically at the table as if it contained a cipher. "can we not talk about food we ain't got?" jayne bellowed, fidgeting about with his chopsticks waiting for crumbs to drop. he's like a dog, simon thought. "if we had apples, we could make cider, " zoe added, ignoring jayne's frustration. her eyes met wash's and they seemed to disappear into some moment in the past where they were drinking cider together. "don't get too attached to the idea, " mal said darkly. "ain't no apples on newhall." "maybe next time we find seeds, we could plant an apple tree on the ship. then we wouldn't have to wait for port, " kaylee suggested. "do you have any idea how long it takes a tree like that to grow, " jayne balked. "do you?" kaylee retorted. "well, " jayne stammered. "it--" "six to ten years, unless genetically altered or artificially accelerated, " river interrupted. "that's it, " jayne affirmed. "years." kaylee seemed disappointed, but only briefly. "probably starve to death before then, " jayne muttered. "so if they don't have apples, what do they have on newhall?" wash asked. "nothing, " mal answered. when he didn't offer any more insight, wash turned to zo. "just settlers, " zo clarified. "the first crop failed. that's why they need this food shipment to get them through their first winter." "they got money?" jayne asked or world series of poker.

That he or she did not want to attempt a blind trial or wished to stop once initiated, the blind trial was ended regardless of the number of items completed. learning to respond to game items in the blind condition was presented to participants as part of the game rather than as a test. in order to maintain a naturalistic approach to testing, no barriers, earphones or headphones were used. instead, a facilitator-blind condition was created individually for each dyad. the blind condition was created by turning the computer monitor away so that the facilitator could not see the screen, but the participant and researcher could. in each case both the researcher and the facilitator verified the blind condition. videotaped sessions were used to confirm the blind condition. facilitators supported eight of nine participants at the right hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder. the left-handed participant was supported at the left wrist. the researcher sat at the nondominant side of each participant in order to allow full view of the computer screen, participant and facilitator while being outside the direct line of vision of the dyad. post-test a post-test was given to participants who responded to word attack items at a greater than chance level. the post-test was comprised of 10 word attack items to be completed without fc. in order to preserve naturalistic conditions no pretest was given. instead, current psychological and speech assessments from participants' records were used to verify tested reading and communication skills prior to the study. the post-baseline method was used rather than a pre-baseline for two reasons. first, the post-test allowed the researcher to control for incidental or developmental learning that might have occurred during the study. second, a pre-baseline may have unfairly influenced the participants and created an atmosphere of failure. inter-rater reliability videotaped sessions were viewed twice and transcribed. an independent observer viewed and rated approximately 10% of responses from nonsystematically selected segments of videotaped sessions. the independent judge scored items on two dimensions: nonblind blind, and correct incorrect. percentages were obtained by calculating the number of items rated identically by the independent judge and the researcher over the total number of items examined. there was 100% agreement between the researcher and the independent judge in determining nonblind and blind trials. agreement was 98.5% on the correct incorrect dimension see table 1.

After the war, mac arranged to take up an appointment at queen's university, which was to have begun in the spring of 1946.but the numbers of servicemen attending university was so great that he agreed to begin in the fall of 1945, with a heavy load of teaching; and, as he later said, no time to prepare. he taught steadily through to the spring of 1947; and, at the same time, was helping to develop a forecasting model in ottawa. by his own admission this experience left him in poor health and it took close to ten years to fully recover from the extraordinary effort. during the decade of the 1960s, mac was director of the economic institute at queen's 1960-1 he was head of the department 1964-68 president of the canadian economics association 1968-69 and a member of the provincial committee on the healing arts where he wrote most of two of the three volumes of the final report. mac was also at the centre of the building of a modern graduate program in economics and a modern faculty to complement this program. the graduate program had to be designed from scratch, and as there were no ground rules as guides and the hiring situation was desperate, it is hard to convey the hours of effort this enterprise took. to indicate the dimensions of the accomplishment, in 1960 the department had roughly six ma students; by 1968 there were just short of 100 graduate ma and phd students registered in the economics graduate program on campus, and the faculty had grown from eight to twenty-eight over this same period. mac's great pride was that in 1968, a very tight labour market for new graduates, he hired eight new faculty members. the publication that establishes mac as one of the major figures in canadian economics is historical statistics of canada. mac was manager and editor of the six-year project 1959-65 ; , as well as its driving force. the volume includes twenty-one sections, each corresponding to a different area of the canadian economy. the divisions were headed up by a section chief, drawn from canada's leading economists. mac headed up some of the sections. since 1965, historical statistics has been the starting point for most work in canadian economic history and the inspiration for a great deal of research. one marvels at the sense of unity that mac brought to that volume, a work that has the imprint of such a strong editor that it appears to be the product of a single hand. the clarity and the comprehensiveness of historical statistics, and the development of series that are of fundamental concern to those studying the canadian economy, have for the past nearly 40 years made possible a range of scholarship that we would not have seen otherwise. testament to the care that mac brought to the project, as he brought to all his work, is the fact that when after 15 years statistics canada produced a second edition of historical statistics hardly any of the original series were revised. mac was the driving force behind the second edition as well, although his involvement was much less.
